Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Articles and translations must be written in English and should include footnotes and citations, where applicable. Their length should normally not exceed 15 double-spaced pages; their format should conform to that described in the Author Guidelines. Translations into English should conform to the Translation Guidelines detailed below. 

In addition to the article, translation, or review submission, authors must send an abstract of about 150 words, as well as a short biography (approximately 40 words) and may also include a list of three to five key words based on the article or translation. Book reviews require only a short biography and may include three to five keywords. 

Icelandic Connection conforms to the citation and bibliography system of The Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition). In addition to this, there are some editorial decisions the journal has made on a number of issues. 

We use the short style of footnote citation, following the appropriate reference contains only enough information to identify the corresponding entry in the bibliography.

Font: The journal is printed in Gentium, a Garamond-family font that is freely-downloadable and includes an excellent range of Unicode characters.

Oxford comma: The journal uses the Oxford comma (also known as the serial comma), when a conjunction joins the last two elements of a series of three or more items.

Icelanders are normally alphabetised by first name.

The journal attempts systematically to use Canadian spelling. If you are unsure about Canadian spelling, consult the Oxford Canadian Dictionary of Current English. 

Titles of books should be italicised throughout the text and article titles should appear in quotation marks, including in the bibliography.

If your submission is accepted for publication, these are the steps we will take:

(1) Revise as suggested by the reviewers and make sure your document conforms to the journal style as described above. Also double-check the accuracy of all your quotations against the original sources.

(2) Supply an abstract and short biography. You may also provide a list of three to five key words based on your article, translation, or review.

(3) Your final version will be copy edited and sent back to you for approval.

(4) The article, translation, or review will be made available on a proofing-site before it is published. Please check your article, translation, or review when it is made available to you on this site. 

(5) The article, translation, or review will be published online.

(6) Given that the journal is published online, corrections can continue to be made after an article, translation, or review has been first published. Please note that this opportunity for correction should be used only to deal with actual errors. Such corrections are not intended to allow ongoing revision of a work. 

TRANSLATION GUIDELINES

Icelandic Connection welcomes translations of poetry, drama, fiction and literary nonfiction written originally in Icelandic.

Your submission must include the following (in addition to an abstract and biography):

  • A brief introduction to the translated text.
  • The original work and the translation.
  • Bibliography of primary and (where applicable) secondary sources.
  • Verification that you are granting Icelandic Connection permission to publish the original text and translation, and that you have the rights to do so.
  • The author's translation must not have been previously published, although the original text and/or another translation by a different author may have been.

All articles for submission to Icelandic Connection will be made under this section.

Copyright Notice

All authors published in Icelandic Connection retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under an International Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0), which means that anyone may share, copy, and adapt the material for non-commercial purposes, as long as they credit the author and this journal and do not distribute the modified version.
